Life is short, the age to come is long, and little the length of our present existence. Until you come to know yourself through humility and spiritual knowledge your life is one of toil and sweat. To know yourself means that you must guard yourself diligently from everything external to you; it means respite from worldly concerns and cross-examination of the conscience. And then a kind of super rational divine humility suddenly descends upon the soul, bringing contrition and tears of fervent compunction to the heart, you will be filled with a strange, unspeakable intoxication—the intoxication of compunction—and will enter into the depths of humility. You will cleave to the realities that truly exist and cannot perish; and, making these things your own, you will rise above pain and pleasure, entirely transformed into a tabernacle of holiness, you ascend to the citadel of love.

Tills du lär känna dig själv genom ödmjukhet och andlig visdom är ditt liv ett slit och svett. Живот је кратак, будући векови бескрајни, а времена у овдашњем животу је мало. Онај, пак, ко себе још није познао преко смиреноумља и познања у труду и зноју ходи путем овога живота. Онај ко је познао себе – кроз велико чување у односу на спољашњост, кроз напуштање светских дела и строго испитивање савести – изненадно ступа у душу и неко божанствено смирење изнад речи, које срцу доноси скрушеност и сузе топлог умилења. Због превасходства дара Божијег, човек доспева у дубину смиреноумља. Онај ко се удостојио да пребива у реченом дару испуњава се неизрецивом опијеношћу умилења. Он се, дакле, везује уз оно што опстаје и не може да пропадне. Иштући то, он постаје виши од патње и уживања земаљских и потом, поставши сав станиште побожности, он усходи у горњи град љубави и доспева до савршенства.

Instrumentation

In "Citadel of Love" Zivkovic extensively explores various instrumentation doublings and percussion instruments, which include Waterphone (played both by the percussionist and the cellist), Theremin (by percussionist), Tenor Psaltery (performed by the violinist), Hammer on Anvil (by the pianist), various bells, gongs and wooden instruments performed by the flutist, clarinetist and the string trio, and as well speaking or singing.

Text usage

Despite the fact that the composition is purely instrumental, Zivkovic uses various texts that are not sung but spoken by the performers. In the first movement we hear in the Church-Slavonic "Gospodi pomiluj" (Lord, have mercy) read by the cellist. On the end of the second movement the pianist reads the complete Psalm 121 in English ("I lifted my eyes to the mountains...") and in the last, fourth movement, the violinist plays the psaltery and speaks loudly in the Church-Slavonic "Mir svima!" (Peace Be Unto All!).

Citadel of Love is a highly personal ensemble work creating a unique and intimate atmosphere from an instrumentation which can be overly familiar to us nowadays. The narrative voice of the piano together with the other six instruments, subtly adding their vocal voices as well as percussion instruments, carries the listener from beginning to end through an inner drama of intensity and fullness of soundscapes.

Citadel of Love är ett högst personligt ensemblestycke som lyckas skapa en unik och intim atmosfär utifrån en instrumentation som idag är mycket utbredd. Pianots berättande röst tillsammans med de andra sex instrumenten, som var och en subtilt lägger till vokalröst samt olika slagverk, för lyssnaren från början till slut genom ett intensivt inre drama och rika klangvärldar.
